Students, artists protest abolition of music, physical education teacher posts in primary schools
They emphasised that music and physical education are not mere forms of entertainment, but vital tools for nurturing creativity, emotional growth and aesthetic sensibility among children
Students, musicians, and cultural activists held a musical procession in front of Abahani Field in the capital's Dhanmondi today (7 November), protesting the government's decision to abolish the posts of music and physical education teachers in primary schools.
They alleged that the decision came under pressure from so-called religion-based organisations and described it as an attempt to erase culture through ideological dominance.
They emphasised that music and physical education are not mere forms of entertainment, but vital tools for nurturing creativity, emotional growth and aesthetic sensibility among children.
The organisers warned that Bangladesh's move to diminish such subjects could harm the nation's future and undermine its pluralistic society, cultural heritage, and the practice of free thought.
The organisers placed three demands: reinstate the posts, ensure education policy is guided by educators and cultural thinkers, and officially recognise the importance of these subjects and ensure job security for those trained in these fields.
They said 472 citizens have signed and expressed their support for the demands.
