Steps on halting IPL broadcast in Bangladesh after reviewing legal basis: Rizwana
The issue arose after Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from the IPL, prompting the law adviser to propose suspending the tournament’s broadcast in Bangladesh
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said a decision on whether to halt the broadcast of this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) in Bangladesh will be made after reviewing the legal basis and procedures.
She made the remarks today (4 January) during an exchange of views with members of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat's media centre, as the issue arose after Bangladesh cricketer Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the IPL, prompting Law Adviser Asif Nazrul to propose suspending the tournament's broadcast in Bangladesh.
When journalists drew her attention to the matter, Rizwana said it would have been preferable to keep sports separate, but politics has unfortunately been brought into the issue.
She noted that even amid political tensions, sports and cultural exchanges are usually regarded as means to ease such strains, but the opposite has happened in this case.
The information adviser further said media reports suggest that a Bangladeshi player was dropped on political grounds after initially being confirmed, which has naturally sparked negative public reaction.
"In this situation, we also need to take a position. We are reviewing the legal basis and procedure for that position. After verification, necessary steps will be taken," she said.
