Shift 20% of transport to rail and waterways to ease highway pressure: Adviser Fouzul
He highlighted costly, underused infrastructure like the Matarbari road and stressed minimising land acquisition delays while prioritising affordable projects.
Railways, road transport and bridges adviser Md Fouzul Kabir Khan has stressed the need to divert at least 20% of the country's passenger and cargo transport to rail and waterways in order to ease pressure on national highways.
"Thinking that traffic congestion will be solved simply by expanding roads from eight lanes to ten is wrong," he said during a views-exchange meeting with officials from the Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Railway in Chattogram today (28 November).
Fouzul criticised "custom-made" roads from the Awami League era, citing the Itna-Mithamoin road as a wasteful project that harmed the environment and local resources, and stressed that future roads must have clear economic and social justification.
He highlighted costly, underused infrastructure like the Matarbari road and stressed minimising land acquisition delays while prioritising affordable projects.
He said resource limitations require careful planning, noting that the same investment could build either a hospital or a road, making project impact analysis essential.
