Severe traffic jam paralyses 15km stretch of Dhaka-Sylhet Highway
Due to inadequate maintenance, numerous potholes have developed on a 12-kilometre section between Ashuganj Roundabout and the Sarail-Bishwaroad intersection, resulting in vehicles taking four to six hours to cross the area

A severe traffic jam has been reported on a 15-kilometre stretch of the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in the Brahmanbaria section due to ongoing roadwork, causing immense suffering for long-distance travellers.
The congestion began around midnight on Tuesday (8 October) and extended from Sohagpur in Ashuganj to Shahbazpur in Sarail.
According to local sources, work to upgrade the 51-kilometre road from Ashuganj river port to Akhaura land port into four lanes is ongoing, but progressing slowly.
Due to inadequate maintenance, numerous potholes have developed on a 12-kilometre section between Ashuganj Roundabout and the Sarail-Bishwaroad intersection, resulting in vehicles taking four to six hours to cross the area.
The Roads and Highways Department has been conducting temporary repair work at the Ashuganj Roundabout and Sarail-Bishwaroad intersection to ease the situation.
However, as one side of the road has been closed for repairs, traffic congestion has worsened over the past three days and intensified further today.
Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan is scheduled to visit the highway this morning to inspect its condition.
Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Khatihata Highway Police Station, said the congestion worsened from midnight and is primarily due to the poor state of the road.
He added that the Highway Police are working to bring the situation under control.
