Severe traffic congestion has gripped the Dhaka-bound lane of the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in the Gazaria section of Munshiganj, causing prolonged suffering for passengers and drivers.
The gridlock began after repair work on the damaged Langalbandh Bridge in the Sonargaon area of Narayanganj started at midnight (2 March).
Slow vehicular movement over the bridge triggered tailbacks along the highway, which gradually spread to the Gazaria stretch as the morning progressed.
As of the filing of this report at 9am, the traffic jam prevailed was continuing along the highway.
Dhaka-bound truck driver Mohon Mia said he got stuck in traffic shortly after crossing the Daudkandi Bridge at around 3am.
He expressed frustration as the congestion showed no signs of easing despite long hours of waiting.
Car driver Ujjal Pradhan said, "Around 13 kilometres of the Dhaka-bound lane in the Gazaria section have virtually come to a standstill. Although traffic movement towards Cumilla remains somewhat normal, I have been sitting for two and a half hours without being able to cross the Meghna Bridge. Under normal circumstances, it takes only 8-10 minutes to pass this stretch."
Md Shawkat Hossain, in-charge of Gazaria Bhoberchar Highway Police Outpost, said, "Due to the repair work on the damaged Langalbandh Bridge in the Narayanganj section, traffic congestion began on the Dhaka-bound lane from midnight on Monday and later spread to the Gazaria area. Highway police are working tirelessly to ease the congestion."
