Serving as interim govt adviser was a proud experience: Asif Mahmud says in resignation letter
Asif says he carried out his responsibilities with “dedication and sincerity, reflecting the spirit of the popular uprising”
Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has stepped down from his role as an adviser to the interim government, describing his tenure as a "proud experience" in his resignation letter.
Asif, along with Adviser Mahfuj Alam, submitted their resignation letters to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at his official residence Jamuna today (10 December).
In the letter, Asif expressed deep respect for the martyrs and injured of the July Uprising, saying, "I begin by paying heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed during the July Uprising. Following the end of long-standing fascist rule through the collective efforts of students and the public, it was a proud experience to serve on the interim government's advisory council under your leadership to build a new Bangladesh."
He added that he carried out his responsibilities at the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives with "dedication and sincerity, reflecting the spirit of the popular uprising".
However, Asif stated that in the emerging political context, he has decided to contest the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
"Although there is no legal obligation requiring me to resign, I firmly believe it is not ethically appropriate for an adviser participating in elections to remain in the interim government. To ensure a transparent, impartial, and conflict-free election, I consider stepping down from my post the proper course of action," he said.
Concluding his letter, Asif respectfully requested relief from the advisory council and sought blessings for his future endeavours in service of the nation and its people.
Asif, 27, a student of the University of Dhaka, was one the prominent student leaders who played key roles in the July Uprising.
Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on 5 August last year, an interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus was formed on 8 August where Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud were included as advisers.
After being sworn in as adviser, Asif Mahmud told the media that the new interim government was a combination of experience and youth.
"We will take the country forward together," he had said.
