Security tightened around Baitul Mukarram amid protests over Osman Hadi’s murder
The protests were organised following the death of Hadi, who was aiming to contest the upcoming national polls as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Police stepped up security at and around the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka as Bangladesh Khilafat Chhatra Majlis and Sammilito July Jote supporters gathered there today (19 December), demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the murder of Inqilab Mancha Spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Both organisations were seen holding rallies in front of the mosque after Jummah prayers.
Hussain Muhammad Farabi, assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Motijheel zone, told The Business Standard that additional security measures were put in place in the area and its surrounding localities to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Khelafat Majlis's Dhaka metropolitan unit organised a march, demanding punishment for those involved in the killing of Hadi.
The march began at the north gate of the Baitul Mukarram after the Jummah prayers. It later passed through Paltan, the National Press Club and the Kadam Foara area before concluding in Segunbagicha.
The protests were organised following the death of Hadi, who was aiming to contest the upcoming national polls as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
He passed away yesterday (18 December) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.
Hadi had been battling for his life for six days after being shot in the head on 12 December while travelling in a battery-run rickshaw in the capital's Paltan area.
