Some security guards forcibly took away an arrested close associate of former Awami League lawmaker Jahangir Kabir Nanak from police custody in Dhaka's Lalmatia area this morning (12 March).

The arrestee, identified as Golam Mostafa, is accused in five separate cases filed with Mohammadpur, Rampura, Badda, Cantonment, and Chawkbazar police stations.

He was apprehended by the Mohammadpur Police earlier in the day, said police.

However, shortly after his arrest, a group of security guards snatched him away from the police, Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division, confirmed to The Business Standard.

He said, "Police went to Lalmatia to arrest the suspect. However, as soon as they took him into custody, Golam's associates created a mob and attempted to assault the policemen."

"The officers were forced to retreat, and the suspect was released. I have informed my superiors. Action will be taken soon," he added.

Meanwhile, speaking to TBS, Delwar, one of the security guards involved in the attack, said, "At around 11:00am, our sir, Golam Mostafa, the owner of Averroes School, was about to get into his car when the police attempted to arrest him."

"They even put a handcuff on him, but we surrounded the officers and took him inside. There was some scuffle between our people and the police. Later, after a phone call from our authorities to the police station's officer-in-charge [OC], they removed his handcuffs and left," he added.

DMP Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Ibne Mizan said the entire incident is being investigated.

"We are looking into the matter to determine why the police team was sent with such a small team. We will also investigate the security guards who attempted to assault the officers. A senior officer will be appointed to conduct a thorough inquiry," he said.

When asked about allegations that the Mohammadpur OC was involved in the suspect's release, DC said, "Only the OC can explain what actually happened. We are investigating the entire matter."
