SAD protests mob violence, extortion blocking expressway near Jazira toll plaza
The protest began at 5:15pm for around 40 minutes when demonstrators carrying banners occupied the expressway, halting all forms of vehicular movement

Members of the Shariatpur unit of the Student Against Discrimination (SAD) staged a demonstration today (12 July) by blocking the expressway near the Jazira toll plaza, demanding justice over recent acts of mob violence, killings, and alleged extortion by political organisations, police said.
The protest began at 5:15pm for around 40 minutes when demonstrators carrying banners occupied the expressway, halting all forms of vehicular movement.
Protesters chanted slogans against rising crime and extortion, including an incident in Jatrabari where Shariatpur bus operators were allegedly forced to pay extortion money to Jubo Dal leaders.
The blockade caused massive traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of vehicles from the southwestern districts stranded on their way to Dhaka. After 40 minutes, the protestors withdrew their blockade, allowing traffic to return to normal.
Padma South Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nakib Akram Hossain told The Business Standard, "SAD members staged a protest near the Padma Bridge. Traffic was halted for a short time but resumed after a peaceful discussion with the demonstrators."
The protest ended without violence, with police and students cooperating to maintain order, the OC added.
During the protest, Imran Al Nazir, the convener of SAD's Shariatpur chapter, claimed, "The country is in chaos. There's no rule of law. Anyone can commit crimes with impunity."
"We are deeply disappointed that the government has not taken any steps. If swift action is not taken against the criminals, we will announce even tougher programs," he added.
