According to police and locals, Joy had returned to Thakurgaon after receiving eye treatment in Dhaka. As he was heading home in an auto-rickshaw from the bus terminal, unidentified individuals on two motorcycles attacked him.

They indiscriminately attacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene.

Dr Rakibul Islam Chayon, a medical officer at Thakurgaon 250-bed General Hospital, said, "Joy sustained multiple stab wounds on different parts of his body. Due to severe injuries, several stitches were required, and he will remain under observation for 48 hours."

Victim Kabirul Islam Joy said, "Around 5:00am today, when I reached Bhully from Dhaka, the assailants attacked me. I could not recognise them. They intended to kill me. I demand justice for this attack."

Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Thakurgaon Superintendent of Police said, "We are taking the matter seriously. The perpetrators will be brought to justice after a thorough investigation."

Notably, Joy was actively involved in the July uprising. His body bears 27 bullet wounds, and he had travelled to Dhaka for eye treatment after being shot in the eye.
