Will protect freedom, democracy at cost of my life: President

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (6 September) said he would protect the country's freedom, democracy and sovereignty even at the cost of his life, and urged political parties to avoid confrontation and embrace dialogue and compromise.

He made the remarks at a civic reception at the Government Boys' High School ground in Thakurgaon this afternoon, during his first visit to his home district since taking office.

Referring to his long political struggle, Fakhrul said he had witnessed much repression and persecution in the past, but did not want to see any more fighting or killings.

"I want to see an atmosphere of peace and compromise in the country's politics," he added.

Fakhrul also urged young people to stay away from drugs and other crimes, saying the younger generation should be encouraged to move forward through sports and a healthy lifestyle. He called for collective efforts to prevent drug abuse.

He urged businesspeople in Thakurgaon to increase investment and create new jobs, while calling on local people to become self-reliant and stand on their own feet.

Expressing his gratitude to the people of his home district, Fakhrul said, "My life is deeply connected to this soil."

He also said he would never be able to repay the love and affection he had received from the people of the district.

Earlier in the day, the country's 23rd president reached Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium in Thakurgaon by helicopter.

He later received a guard of honour at the Circuit House before visiting the family graveyard in the district's Senua union, where he paid tribute at his parents' graves.

He then joined the civic reception at the Government Boys' High School ground, where he addressed the people of Thakurgaon.

The president's visit drew crowds and created a festive atmosphere across the district. At the reception, he said, "Let my name be remembered as one of you."
