July crimes: 22, including Hasina, Kamal and Quader, sentenced to death so far

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has so far sentenced 68 people in seven cases involving crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising, with 22 receiving the death penalty.

Of the 22 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former road transport minister Obaidul Quader, sentenced to death, 18 are absconding, while four are in custody.

The latest verdict, delivered today (15 September) by ICT-2, brought the total number of death-row convicts to 22. The tribunal sentenced Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations to death.

The other six condemned in the case are former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan. All seven were tried in absentia.

The latest verdict is the seventh in cases filed over crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

How the seven verdicts add up

The first six verdicts resulted in 61 people being sentenced, including 15 unique individuals receiving death sentences. The number of death sentences in those cases was 16 because former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman received death sentences in both the Chankharpul and Rampura cases.

The seventh verdict added seven people to the death row and seven to the total number sentenced, bringing the overall figures to 68 sentenced and 22 condemned to death.

The seven verdicts

1. Sheikh Hasina case — 17 November 2025

Former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were sentenced to death. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who became a state witness, received five years in prison. Hasina and Kamal were tried in absentia.

2. Chankharpul killings — 26 January 2026

Three former senior police officials — former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty and former ADC Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam — were sentenced to death. Five other police officers received prison terms ranging from three to six years.

3. Ashulia killings and body burning — 5 February 2026

Six people were sentenced to death, including former Dhaka-19 MP Saiful Islam and Jubo League cadre Roni Bhuiyan. Four former police officers — AFM Sayed, Abdul Malek, Bishwajit Saha and Mukul Chokder — were also condemned. Nine others received prison terms — seven were sentenced to life imprisonment and two to seven years' rigorous imprisonment.

4. Abu Sayed killing — 9 April 2026

Former ASI Amir Hossain and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy were sentenced to death. Three others received life imprisonment and the rest received different prison terms.

5. Rampura-Banasree killings — 28 June 2026

Former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC Md Rashedul Islam and former Rampura OC Md Mashiur Rahman were sentenced to death. Chanchal Chandra Sarkar received 20 years, and Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan received life imprisonment.

6. Hasanul Haq Inu case — 30 June 2026

JSD President and former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment after being convicted on three of eight charges. He was acquitted of five charges.

7. Obaidul Quader case — 15 September 2026

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Saddam Hussain and Sheikh Wali Asif Enan were all sentenced to death.

Note: Habibur Rahman appears in both the Chankharpul and Rampura verdicts. He is therefore counted once in the 22-person figure, although two separate death sentences were handed down against him.

The Awami League-affiliated figures

Of the 22 people sentenced to death, 11 are Awami League or affiliated-organisation figures: Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Obaidul Quader, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Moinul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Saddam Hussain, Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, Saiful Islam and Roni Bhuiyan.

The remaining 11 are police officials.

Of the 22 death-row convicts, four are in custody, and 18 are absconding. The four in custody are Abdul Malek and Mukul Chokder, convicted in the Ashulia case, and Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra Roy, convicted in the Abu Sayed case.
