Bus owners and workers today blocked Dhaka-Sylhet highway demanding a stop to plying of three-wheelers on the highway.

They carried out the programme from 10:00 am to 10:45 am at Sarail-Bishwa Road intersection in Brahmanbaria.

They also brought out a protest procession led by Md Hanif, general secretary of Brahmanbaria Bus-Minibus Owners Association, and Niyamat Khan, general secretary of Local Bus Transport Committee, at around 10:15 am.

The protesters chanted slogans from the procession to fulfill their demand. Later they gave a seven-day ultimatum and withdrew the blockade. Traffic movement became normal at around 11:00 am.

The blockade programme caused a severe traffic jam on the highway.

Md Hanif said, "The High Court banned the movement of three-wheelers on Dhaka-Sylhet highway. But three-wheelers are moving on the highway freely by managing the highway police. This is causing accidents on the highway. CNG-run-auto rickshaw drivers are not following the health guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic. So we gave a seven-day ultimatum to stop the three-wheeler movement on the highway. We will go for more rigorous movement if our demands are not met."
