Old feud, financial dispute led to Asadul killing
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.
A prior altercation and a financial dispute led to the murder of Asadul Haque alias Lambu Asad, 28, in Mohammadpur, as acquaintances lured him from home and killed him, police said at a briefing in Dhaka today (18 April).
Mohammadpur Police arrested four suspects – Md Munna, 24, Akhtar Hossain, 45, Miraj Fakir, 22, and Nayan alias Khokon, 24, from Keraniganj. Police also recovered a switchgear (knife) and a motorcycle used in the killing.
Tejgaon division deputy commissioner Md Ibne Mizan said the suspects were identified using information technology. After initial raids in Mohammadpur and nearby areas, police arrested the four, including the alleged mastermind, from Keraniganj.
He said Asadul and Akhtar had a physical altercation earlier. Akhtar filed a case, leading to Asadul's arrest and imprisonment. Asadul was recently released on bail. A financial dispute between them also persisted.
"Over these issues, Akhtar, with the help of associates, called Asadul at midnight and killed him by stabbing and hitting him with bricks," the DC said. He added that several more suspects have been identified and police raids are ongoing.
Asadul's cousin filed a murder case with the police station. The arrestees are being sent to court, and police will seek remand.
Police said Asadul had six cases against him, including four drug cases, one under another section and one under the Speedy Trial Act. Munna faces seven cases, including drugs and snatching, while Miraj has one and Nayan two. No case has yet been found against Akhtar.
Responding to a question on crime in Mohammadpur, the DC said it is the largest among six police stations under Tejgaon division. Regular drives are conducted in Rayerbazar, Basila, Dhaka Udyan and Chand Udyan.
He said some attackers came from outside, committed the crime and later took shelter elsewhere, which is why arrests were made outside Dhaka. Police plan to strengthen checkposts and intensify operations.
On political links, he said Akhtar's affiliation has been found and is being verified.
