No significant progress on exploring new overseas job markets: Info minister
Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said that Bangladesh’s foreign missions are not sufficiently empowered to deliver the expected level of services.
Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that Bangladesh's overseas employment sector remains largely concentrated in traditional destinations, with little progress in exploring new job markets.
"There are many unexplored markets, such as Moldova in Eastern Europe. The concerned ministries should focus on exploring those destinations," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a conference titled "Branding Bangladesh Beyond Borders", organised by the Centre for NRB at a city hotel today (12 April).
He urged non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) to provide policy support to the government in identifying and expanding into new overseas job markets.
Shapan also emphasised that skilled migration should be a key focus of Bangladesh's foreign policy, alongside export diversification and attracting foreign investment.
"Building trust in banking channels and providing incentives are crucial to boosting remittance inflows," he added.
Speaking as a special guest, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed said that Bangladesh's foreign missions are not sufficiently empowered to deliver the expected level of services.
"We are unable to effectively promote our national brand at the international level. Besides, we often fail to tell our own stories properly," she said.
State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare Nurul Haque urged NRBs to launch awareness campaigns against irregular migration to help build a positive image of the country abroad.
The event was presided over by S M Shekil Chowdhury, chairman of the Centre for NRB.
