Vacant seats spark speculation over possible alliance
Fakhrul said candidates in these constituencies will be finalised through discussions among BNP and its alliance partners.
The BNP is yet to announce nominees for 63 constituencies in its primary candidates' list for the upcoming national election.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the primary list of candidates' names for 237 constituencies following a meeting of its Standing Committee at the party chairperson's office in the capital's Gulshan today (3 November).
Fakhrul said candidates in these constituencies will be finalised through discussions among BNP and its alliance partners.
The constituencies are Thakurgaon-2, Dinajpur-5, Nilphamari-1, Nilphamari-3, Lalmonirhat-2, Bogura-2, Naogaon-5, Natore-3, Sirajganj-1, Pabna-1, Jhenaidah-1, Jhenaidah-2, Jhenaidah-4, Jashore-5, Narail-2, Bagerhat-1, Bagerhat-2, Bagerhat-3, Khulna-1, Patuakhali-2, Patuakhali-3, Barishal-3, Jhalakathi-1, Pirojpur-1, Tangail-5, Mymensingh-10, Kishoreganj-1, Kishoreganj-5, Manikganj-1, Munshiganj-3, Dhaka-7, Dhaka-9, Dhaka-10, Dhaka-13, Dhaka-17, Dhaka-18, Dhaka-20, Gazipur-1, Gazipur-6, Narsingdi-3, Narayanganj-4, Rajbari-2, Faridpur-1, Madaripur-2, Sunamganj-2, Sunamganj-4, Sylhet-4, Sylhet-5, Brahmanbaria-3, Brahmanbaria-6, Cumilla-2, Cumilla-7, Lakshmipur-1, Lakshmipur-4, Chattogram-3, Chattogram-6, Chattogram-9, Chattogram-11, Chattogram-14, Chattogram-15 and Cox's Bazar-2.
Nominations in these seats can go either to BNP candidates or leaders of its allies and like-minded parties in simultaneous movements.
Yesterday, Tarique Rahman in a virtual programme said BNP has decided to support some candidates from other democratic parties that took part in the anti-fascist movement alongside BNP.
According to unverified sources, BNP has left the seats vacant for the following political leaders: Jonayed Saki, chief coordinator of the Ganosamhati Andolon, for Brahmanbaria-6; Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagorik Oikya, for Bogura-2; Andaleeve Rahman Partha, chairman of the Bangladesh National Party (BJP), for Dhaka-17; Mustafa Jamal Haider, chairman of the Jatiya Party (Zafar), for Pirojpur-1; Shahadat Hossain Selim, chairman of the Bangladesh Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), for Lakshmipur-1; Syed Ehsanul Huda, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM), for Kishoreganj-5; Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), for Dhaka-13; Professor Omar Faruk, son of Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed and LDP chairman, for Chattogram-14; Dr Redwan Ahmed, secretary general of the party, for Cumilla-7; Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad, coordinator of the Nationalist Like-Minded Alliance and chairman of NPP, for Narail-2; Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gana Odhikar Parishad, for Patuakhali-3; and Rashed Khan, general secretary of the same party, for Jhenaidah-2.
