National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam said they are determined to "liberate the people of Gopalganj from Mujibism" and vowed to take to the streets until justice is served for the recent violence in the district.

Speaking at a street rally organised by the NCP at Janata Bank intersection in Faridpur city today (17 July), Nahid said, "We will free the ordinary people of Gopalganj from Mujibism. We urge the administration not to harass the general public unnecessarily. But the fascists and terrorists must be arrested."

He alleged that four individuals were extrajudicially killed during recent clashes and blamed the banned Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League, for the attacks.

"We said after 5 August that Awami League and Chhatra League must be brought under the law. But what are we seeing? No one is being arrested. And even if someone is arrested, they are getting bail from the court. The trial process is not progressing," he said.

"We have taken to the streets demanding justice for the autocratic allies and corrupt officials within the administration. We will not leave the streets until justice is served," he added.

Addressing the government, Nahid warned, "Yesterday, a version of 'Refined Awami League' was seen in Gopalganj. We defeated Mujibist terrorists on 5 August. We are peacefully saying, arrest these terrorists immediately. Otherwise, we will march to Gopalganj very soon."

"But this time, we won't march just to return. We will liberate Gopalganj's people from Mujibism forever, only then we'll leave," he added.

He further stated, "Those who thought they could stop our July journey with attacks and armed assault have forgotten who they are standing against."

The NCP convener also alleged that since 5 August, Gopalganj has become a sanctuary for fascists.

"We heard that those who have cases against them across the country, fugitive leaders of the banned Chhatra League, have taken refuge in Gopalganj. They carried out a premeditated armed attack to assassinate leaders of the National Citizen Party and the mass uprising," Nahid said.

Reiterating the party's commitment to its ongoing campaign, he added, "The National Citizen Party took on the challenge to visit 64 districts in 30 days, and we will fulfil that challenge. By 3 August, we will hold rallies in all 64 districts."

Earlier in the day, Nahid Islam and central leaders of the NCP led a march from the Faridpur Circuit House to the Janata Bank intersection, where the rally was held.

Following the rally, the NCP delegation left Faridpur for Rajbari.

BGB members have been deployed in Faridpur to avoid any untoward incident, said Shariful Islam, public relations officer at BGB headquarters.

The government imposed a curfew in Gopalganj district amid heightened tensions over clashes between police and Awami League activists over the rally yesterday (16 July).
