91.7% of post-5 August violence linked to BNP, 20.7% Awami League: TIB
BNP leaders or activists were involved in 550 incidents, while Awami League members were linked to 124 cases.
As many as 91.7% of incidents of political violence that occurred after 5 August are linked to the BNP, according to a study by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
The study, released today (2 February), also found the involvement of the Awami League in 20.7% of incidents, Jamaat-e-Islami in 7.7%, and the National Citizen Party (NCP) in 1.2%.
The findings of the research report titled "One and a half years after the fall of authoritarianism: Expectations and outcomes" were released at TIB's conference room.
TIB said factional conflicts and political violence among different parties have continued unabated. Between August 2024 and December 2025 - a period of 17 months - a total of 600 incidents of political violence were recorded across the country, leaving 158 political activists dead and 7,082 injured, it added.
Of these incidents, 550 involved BNP leaders or activists, while Awami League members were linked to 124 cases.
Jamaat was involved in 46 incidents during the period, the study noted.
According to TIB, following the fall of the government, clashes and violence erupted over attempts to seize control of institutions and activities previously dominated by the Awami League. These included extortion at transport terminals and stands, illegal extraction of stones from quarries and rivers in Sylhet, and struggles to control leases of bridges, markets, ghats, sand quarries and water bodies.
The study observed that internal control mechanisms within political parties were largely ineffective, and parties failed to take effective action against their own activists involved in violence and illegal activities.
