Shafiqur holds Tk61 lakh in cash
The Jamaat chief’s affidavit shows an annual income of Tk3.60 lakh
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman holds cash amounting to Tk60,76,497, according to an affidavit submitted to the Election Commission (EC) for the 13th parliamentary election.
The Jamaat chief's affidavit shows an annual income of Tk3,60,000 from agriculture and other sources, with total assets valued at Tk1,49,99,474.
Shafiqur owns a duplex house built on 11.77 decimals of land, valued at approximately Tk27 lakh, along with 2.17 acres of agricultural land worth Tk17.71 lakh.
The Election Commission published the affidavit on its website today (31 December).
The Jamaat chief reported investments of Tk27,16,880 million in shares, bonds and other securities, as well as household appliances, furniture and a vehicle collectively valued at Tk6.5 lakh.
Bank deposits amount to Tk4,90,263. His income tax payment for the 2025-26 fiscal year was Tk30,000.
The affidavit further states that of 34 cases filed against him, the Jamaat chief has been acquitted or relieved in 32, while two cases remain stayed by the High Court.
Under electoral law, candidates are required to submit detailed affidavits containing 10 categories of information with their nomination papers, all of which must be made public. The EC has warned that legal action can be taken even after the election if any false information is found in the affidavits.
More than 2,500 nomination papers have been submitted for the 300 parliamentary seats in the 13th national election, with candidates from over 50 political parties and a large number of independents.
After scrutiny, appeals and disposal, the final list of candidates will be published on 20 January, with electoral symbols allocated the following day. Voting, along with a referendum, is scheduled to take place on 12 February.
