Rizvi, Nazrul among senior BNP figures missing from candidate lineup. Here's why
The party announced a list of candidates across 237 constituencies during a press briefing today.
With the 13th national election drawing closer, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today (3 November) released a list of potential candidates — notably excluding several of its senior and prominent leaders.
Among those missing from the list are Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, National Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, Organising Secretary Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, and Assistant International Affairs Secretary Barrister Rumeen Farhana.
According to party insiders, Nazrul and Rizvi have been assigned key roles in election coordination and campaign management, which is why they are not contesting as candidates.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the list of candidates across 237 constituencies during a press briefing at the party chairperson's office in Gulshan in the evening.
However, he did mention, "This is our list of potential candidates, which may still see changes. We might make adjustments following discussions with our allies in the simultaneous movement, or if the Standing Committee or Parliamentary Board deems any revision necessary.
"However, this list should be considered our most appropriate draft so far."
The BNP's move comes as part of its ongoing preparations for the upcoming election, likely to be held in the first week of February next year.
