PR system will undermine people's power to elect their representatives: Fakhrul
The BNP leader also said that if his party comes to power, it would ensure representation of all communities in the upper house of the parliament

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concerns that adopting the proportional representation (PR) voting system would undermine the public's power to elect their representatives.
"Under this system, political parties, rather than the people, would decide who becomes a representative," said the BNP leader while speaking at a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Christian Forum at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan, Dhaka today (13 October).
He noted that suddenly demanding the PR system is not fully understood by those advocating for rapid polls.
"In which system the next election will follow should be left to the upcoming parliament. If PR is introduced now, the public will not understand what it entails," he said.
The BNP leader also said that if his party comes to power, it would ensure representation of all communities in the upper house of parliament while prioritising the resolution of the country's four million unemployed. "We believe this crisis can be addressed within one and a half years," he added.
The meeting was chaired by Father Albert Rosario, President of the Bangladesh Christian Lawyers Association, and moderated by Anil Leo Costa, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Christian Forum.
