PR-based voting can permanently block fascism from emerging again: Jamaat leader Moazzem

Holding elections through the proportional representation (PR) system will permanently block fascism from emerging again in the country, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Moazzem Hossain Helal said today (19 September).
"If elections are held again under the current state framework, it will lead to the birth of fascism once more and another Hasina government will emerge," he said while addressing a rally in Rajshahi city.
He further stated, "There is no legal basis yet for the July Charter, so a level playing field cannot be ensured.
"Many ask why we continue with our movement despite ongoing discussions. The reason is that no solution is emerging, and under some pressure, the government is moving toward favouring a single party. Our movement is a part of politics."
The rally was part of the party's central programme over a five-point demand.
The demands include: holding the next national election in February based on the July National Charter; introducing the PR system in both houses of parliament in the upcoming election; ensuring a level playing field for all for a free, fair and acceptable election; visible trial of all oppression, killings, and corruption by the fallen fascist regime; and banning the activities of the Jatiyo Party and 14-party alliance, which it termed as collaborators of autocracy.
