Elections must be held on the legal basis of the July Charter: Jamaat
Tahe said, "If you can do them (reforms) in parliament, then what’s the problem in doing them now?”

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Naib-e-Ameer and former MP Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has said that the next national elections have to be held after giving the July Charter a legal basis.
Today (13 August) at 5pm, a protest rally was held in the capital's Bijoynagar area under the initiative of Dhaka Metropolitan Jamaat (North and South). After the rally, a protest march circled the Paltan area.
Speaking at the rally, Naib-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said, "We want to participate in the election. But before that, all matters ensuring the fairness of the election must be made clear. We want an election, not a selection."
He further said, "There is a conspiracy to carry out this election according to a certain design and once again deprive the people of their right to vote. If such a staged election takes place, if it is held under a foreign design, then the people will secure a fair election with their lives and blood, Inshallah."
Taher said, "Our friends say reforms will be done after going to parliament. If you can do them in parliament, then what's the problem in doing them now?"
He said, "Some say they don't understand PR (proportional representation). Yesterday I saw in a survey that 71% of people want elections under the PR system. That means either you alone don't understand or you don't want to understand."
Addressing the chief adviser, he said, "This is the government's fundamental responsibility – create a level playing field, and give legal recognition to the reforms."
The protest rally, presided over by the party's central executive council member and Dhaka Metropolitan South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, was attended as special guest by Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan.
