Political leaders condemn attack on Nur, demand probe
Strongly denouncing the assault, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged the government to launch a proper investigation into the violent incidents
Political leaders have condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur on Friday night, which left him in a critical condition.
Strongly denouncing the assault, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged the government to launch a proper investigation into the violent incidents.
"I wish Nur a quick recovery and urge the government to investigate the incident," he said in a post on his verified Facebook page.
Denouncing mob culture, he urged to uphold the rule of law and build a peaceful and stable country.
"Collectively, we must ensure that destabilising incidents, such as what happened today, do not spread and push us off this path towards democracy," the BNP leader said.
He added that pro-democracy stakeholders must exercise restraint and tolerance.
In a press statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said BNP respects the right to peaceful political programmes and strongly condemns any attack on lawful democratic activities.
"We strongly condemn and protest the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, General Secretary Rashed Khan, and other leaders and activists."
He also wished Nurul Haque Nur a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest at Banglamotor intersection on Friday at around 11:30pm, condemning the attack.
The procession moved from the NCP party office and concluded with a brief gathering at Shahbagh intersection.
NCP leader Hannan Masud said, "There is a government within the government. This incident proves it. We must find out whether the administration is functioning properly or not."
Also, Students Against Discrimination (SAD) and Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) issued separate statements condemning the attack on Nur.
Zonayed Saki, the chief co-ordinator of Ganosanhati Andolan, yesterday stressed the need for a proper investigation into who was behind the attack.
"We are going through a complicated political situation. There are efforts to delay the election. Amid this situation happened this attack on anti-fascist leaders like Nurul Haque and Rashed Khan by the joint forces; the government must provide an explanation for this," Saki said.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar also expressed deep concern, stating, "We strongly condemn the brutal attack on Nurul Haque Nur and over 50 other leaders and activists by some law enforcement personnel. Immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators must be ensured."
Sarjis smells a deeper conspiracy
Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of NCP's northern region, said there is no scope to view the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad leader Nurul Haque Nur as an everyday event, UNB Reports.
In an immediate reaction posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, Sarjis alleged that the brutal and bloody attack carried out by members of the Army and police on Nurul Haque Nur was not an ordinary one.
He further called for strict action against "pro-Awami League agents" still remaining within the police.
"Both the Army and police know Nurul Haque Nur very well. Yet, he was deliberately targeted and bloodied. Those who are trying to play a dark game from behind the scenes will have their dark hands broken," Sarjis warned.
Gono Odhikar activists block the road in Ctg
Gono Odhikar Parishad activists staged a protest in Chattogram yesterday, blocking a road to condemn the attack on their leaders.
The protesters took position at the 2 No Gate intersection at noon, halting all vehicular movement, which caused significant inconvenience to commuters.
They burned tyres on the road and used barricades to block traffic. The protesters chanted various slogans, including "Catch JaPa, jail them."
Later, at around 2pm, the protesters marched to the Chattogram Metropolitan Police's office.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin, a member of the Gono Odhikar Parishad's high council, said, "Law enforcement personnel publicly attacked our president, Nurul Haque Nur. The attackers must be brought to justice, they must apologise, and Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury must resign."
