BNP, Jamaat, NCP condemn attack on Nur

The BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and National Citizen Party (NCP) have condemned yesterday's (29 August) attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur and other leaders and activists of the party in Dhaka's Kakrail.
Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a "critical" condition, following a clash between activists of the Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad in front of Jatiyo Party's central office in the capital's Kakrail and subsequent action taken by law enforcers to disperse all parties involved.
In a press statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said BNP respects the right to peaceful political programmes and strongly condemns any attack on lawful democratic activities.
"We strongly condemn and protest the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, General Secretary Rashed Khan, and other leaders and activists."
He also wished Nurul Haque Nur a speedy recovery.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar also expressed deep concern, stating, "We strongly condemn the brutal attack on Nurul Haque Nur and over 50 other leaders and activists by some law enforcement personnel. Immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators must be ensured."
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) staged a protest at Banglamotor intersection around 11:30pm, condemning the attack.
The procession moved from the NCP party office and concluded with a brief gathering at Shahbagh intersection.
NCP leader Hannan Masud said, "There is a government within the government. This incident proves it. We must find out whether the administration is functioning properly or not."
Also, Students Against Discrimination (SAD) and Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) issued separate statements condemning the attack on Nur.
Earlier in the day, at around 6:30pm, several people were injured as activists of the Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad clashed in front of Jatiyo Party's central office in Kakrail, Dhaka.
A large deployment of police and army personnel later arrived to restore order.
Meanwhile, a video widely shared on social media shows the joint force using batons to disperse Gono Odhikhar Parishad leaders and activists, who were seen standing behind a dais on the street where they wanted to brief the media.
Abu Hanif, senior leader and media coordinator of Gono Odhikar Parishad, claimed that 50 of their activists, including Nurul Haque Nur and General Secretary Md Rashed Khan, were injured.
Jatiyo Party leaders alleged that activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad launched an attack on them while marching past the party office.
On the other hand, Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders claimed that it was the Jatiyo Party supporters who first hurled bricks and stones at their procession, provoking the clash.
