People haven't entrusted nation's destiny to few parties: Khasru

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today (11 October) said the people of Bangladesh have not entrusted the responsibility of determining the nation's destiny to a handful of political parties.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a seminar titled "Proportional Representation (PR) System: Elections and Critical Perspectives" held at the Cosmos Centre in the capital's Mouchak area. The event was jointly organised by Cosmos Foundation and United News of Bangladesh (UNB).
The senior BNP leader said no one has given political parties the authority to decide the country's future or define its democratic process. He stressed that reforms must come through public engagement and participation in the democratic order.

Khasru underscored the need to restore democracy through elections, saying the first duty is to hold polls under the current constitution and re-establish a democratic order.
Addressing political parties that issue ultimatums, he said disputes must be resolved through dialogue, public discourse and constructive criticism, not threats.

Referring to the National Consensus Commission, Khasru said consensus points already agreed upon should be accepted, while unresolved issues can be addressed by the next elected government in consultation with all stakeholders.
Highlighting the need for a shift in political culture, he emphasised tolerance for differing opinions and respect for opposing views, warning that democracy cannot progress through confrontational politics.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, speaking as special guest, said acting according to the whims of individuals or groups risks repeating the authoritarian practices of past governments.
He suggested that some parties are demanding the PR system merely to secure additional parliamentary seats.
Dr Moyeen Khan concluded by calling for unity, urging all to work together to establish a stable democratic state system for the welfare of the country and its people.
Leaders from various political parties also took part in the seminar.
