Not for a few seats, alliance will depend on fair negotiation: Nur
In case of any delay in election due to the serious illness of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, the Election Commission and government may reconsider it, he says
Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur has said his party will not form alliances for just 2-4 seats, saying any coalition for the nation's interest must be based on fair seat negotiations.
Unveiling the party's candidate for Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar) in a public meeting at Nabinagar Pilot Government High School today (6 December), he stressed that alliances will only be formed for the country's needs and through equitable negotiations.
He announced Nazrul Islam, vice-president of the party's Brahmanbaria district unit, as the candidate for the Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar) constituency in the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Nur recalled that during the Awami League era, Sheikh Hasina had offered both seats and money, but the party refused to compromise with what he called "fascism."
He added that in case of any delay in election due to the serious illness of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, the Election Commission and government may reconsider it.
Regardless, he said Gono Odhikar Parishad intends to field candidates for all 300 seats independently.
Any alliance, he added, will be formed in constituencies where there is strong public support.
He further warned that some political leaders are attempting to reintroduce "threat and domination politics" reminiscent of past fascist rule.
Recalling the 16 years of misrule that were overturned by public protests, he cautioned that anyone opposing the people would face the same fate as former leaders who fled the country.
He urged political parties involved in the Mass Uprising to exercise restraint and tolerance.
