Nomination submission begins in Ctg; security tightened at deputy commissioner's office
Centring the nomination submission process, security has been tightened in the Court Hill area of the port city.
Ahead of the upcoming 13th national election, candidates in Chattogram are submitting their nomination papers in a festive atmosphere.
As of yesterday (28 December), a total of 227 candidates had collected nomination forms. From this morning (29 December), aspirants from different political parties were seen gathering at the offices of the deputy commissioner and the divisional commissioner to submit their papers.
Centring the nomination submission process, security has been tightened in the Court Hill area of the port city. Additional police and army personnel have been deployed at the main gates and surrounding areas of the deputy commissioner and divisional commissioner's offices.
Several key candidates submitted their nomination papers this morning. Among them were BNP-nominated candidate Mostafa Kamal Pasha for Chattogram-3 (Sandwip); Greater Sunni Alliance candidate Maulana Wahed Murad for Chattogram-9 (Kotwali–Bakalia); Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Rezaul Karim for Chattogram-7 (Rangunia); BNP leader Sarwar Alamgir for Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari); and BNP candidate Abu Sufian for Chattogram-9.
Greater Sunni Alliance leader and Chattogram-9 candidate Maulana Wahed Murad told reporters that he is the only "son of the soil" or local candidate in the constituency. He hoped voters would consider the important role an Islamic scholar plays in people's lives when casting their ballots.
Another Chattogram-9 candidate, Abu Sufian, said the electoral environment. He said delivering a free, fair and neutral election depends on the professionalism of all concerned, adding that he hoped the election would become a landmark and meaningful chapter with everyone's cooperation.
Chattogram has a total of 16 parliamentary constituencies covering 15 upazilas and 34 police station areas. Four constituencies fall within the 16 police station areas of the metropolitan city. Among the remaining 12 constituencies, seven are located in north Chattogram and five in south Chattogram.
According to the election schedule, scrutiny of nomination papers by returning officers will take place from 30 December to 4 January. Appeals against the scrutiny decisions can be filed from 5 January to 9 January, with disposal of appeals scheduled from 10 January to 18 January. The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is 20 January, while election symbols will be allotted on 21 January.
