The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued a show-cause notice to its senior joint chief coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud for personally intervening at Dhanmondi Police Station to secure the release of three individuals detained on charges of causing disorder while claiming to be "coordinators".

The notice, signed by the party's Joint Office Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat, was issued today (21 May).

According to the notice, the three individuals were detained by Dhanmondi police on Monday for allegedly causing unrest in a residential area. One of them, Saiful Islam Rabbi, convener of the Mohammadpur unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, had previously been removed from his position by the organisation's central committee for ethical misconduct.

Despite this, Hannan Masud appeared at the police station and secured their release by submitting written undertakings on their behalf.

The notice instructs him to submit a written explanation to the party's disciplinary committee within three days, clarifying the incident and explaining why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

Hannan Masud addressed the issue in a Facebook post from his verified account on Tuesday.

"Three individuals, including the Mohammadpur unit convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, were detained while attempting to incite a mob. Students identifying with this platform created a disturbance at Dhanmondi Police Station," he wrote.

"At the request of the DMP Commissioner, I went to the police station to mediate the situation. Since no charges were filed against them, and there was no intention to do so, I intervened accordingly."

Hannan added that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police had been informed about the individuals involved.

Earlier on Monday night, three coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement allegedly caused a commotion in Dhanmondi by accusing a publisher of being an accomplice to "fascism" and staging a protest outside his residence demanding his arrest.

Later, the police detained the three.
