'Overly ambitious, detached from reality': NCP criticises proposed FY27 budget
The government has projected a budget deficit of around Tk2.5 lakh crore, but in reality the deficit could approach Tk4.5 lakh crore, Atik Mujahid, lawmaker from Kurigram-2, says.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has criticised the proposed FY2026-27 national budget, describing it as overly ambitious and disconnected from economic realities, and warning that the actual budget deficit could be far larger than projected.
Reacting to the budget proposal today (11 June), Atik Mujahid, lawmaker from Kurigram-2 and chief of party's shadow budget committee, said the government's revenue target was unrealistic given current economic conditions.
"The government has projected a budget deficit of around Tk2.5 lakh crore, but in reality the deficit could approach Tk4.5 lakh crore," he said.
According to Atiq, the proposed revenue collection target of Tk6.95 lakh crore is unlikely to be achieved, and the shortfall could exceed Tk2 lakh crore.
"As a result, when the actual figures are taken into account, this could become the largest deficit budget in Bangladesh's history," he added.
Earlier in the day, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the Tk9.38 lakh crore national budget for FY2026-27 in parliament, outlining a strategy focused on economic stabilisation and fiscal reforms.
The budget is the first presented by the current BNP-led government since it assumed office following the 12 February general election.
The Cabinet approved the proposed budget at a special meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban before its presentation in parliament.
