NCP holds torch procession protesting killing of Jamaat leader in Sherpur
The procession began at around 7:30pm in front of the party’s office at Banglamotor, organised by NCP Dhaka South Metropolitan unit.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) today (29 January) held a torch procession in protest against the killing of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Maulana Rezaul Karim in Sherpur's Jhenaigati upazila and incidents of violence against women across the country.
The procession began at around 7:30pm in front of the party's office at Banglamotor, organised by the NCP Dhaka South Metropolitan unit.
The march proceeded from Banglamotor along Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue towards Shahbagh.
During the procession, NCP leaders and activists carried torches and chanted slogans protesting the killing and violence against women, accusing the BNP of involvement in such incidents.
They demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing of Rezaul Karim. The protesters also called for effective measures to prevent violence against women nationwide.
Addressing the gathering, central NCP leaders said political violence and violence against women pose a serious threat to democracy and human rights in the country.
They urged people to build a united resistance against such acts.
Yesterday, Rezaul Karim, secretary of Sreebardi upazila Jamaat-e-Islami, was killed after being injured in a clash between activists of Jamaat and the BNP during an election manifesto reading programme in Sherpur.
The clash broke out at a programme organised by the upazila administration, reportedly following an argument over seating arrangements.
