NCP demands justice, reforms before election; warns of renewed street protests if July Charter not announced soon
During the briefing, Nahid added that the NCP will announce its election manifesto on 3 August
National Citizen Party has no say about the timing of the election but demands that elections must take place only after ensuring justice and systemic reforms, Convener of the party Nahid Islam said today (7 July).
Nahid made the remarks while responding to a journalist's question during a press briefing at the Parjatan Motel in Rajshahi at 11am this morning.
During the briefing, Nahid added that the NCP will announce its election manifesto on 3 August.
"Before that, the party demands the government declare the 'July Charter,' reflecting the demands and spirit of the July uprising. If the charter is not announced, we will take to the streets," he said.
At the same event, Hasnat Abdullah, NCP's chief organiser for the southern region, said, "By labeling this uprising as emotion-driven and dismissing it as mob action, the state is attempting to delegitimise the fight against fascism. The revolutionaries are being targeted, and the media is being used to generate consent for fascism."
Emphasising on the need for official recognition of the July uprising, Hasnat added that if the July Charter is not implemented, people will once again march to Dhaka on 3 August.
Referring to the media outlets of the Bashundhara Group, Hasnat alleged that the conglomerate has launched a mafia-style operation, using its media outlets to orchestrate another "One-Eleven"-style political intervention.
During the briefing, he urged journalists to pursue fact-based journalism.
The press briefing was held on the seventh day of the NCP's ongoing "July March to Build the Nation," marking the anniversary of the July uprising.
The march has already passed through 13 districts and will continue today from Rajshahi to Baneshwar, Puthia, Natore, Sirajganj, and Pabna, with rallies and roadside meetings scheduled in each location.
