Nazmus Sakib show-caused, suspended from National Lawyers Alliance
Sakib says he was suspended due to his statements against Jamaat; NLA leaders differ over reasons
Advocate Nazmus Sakib has been suspended from the National Lawyers Alliance (NLA), the lawyers' platform affiliated with the National Citizen Party (NCP), amid differing explanations from the platform's leaders over the reasons behind a show-cause notice issued against him.
Nazmus Sakib served as joint member secretary of the NLA but did not hold any position within the NCP.
The NLA issued the show-cause notice yesterday (1 February) over Sakib's alleged statements contrary to organisational discipline and decorum. The notice said Sakib had been temporarily relieved of his duties and asked him to submit a written explanation within three working days as to why he should not be permanently expelled.
Speaking to The Business Standard tonight, Sakib confirmed receiving the show-cause notice. "I will submit my response within the stipulated time. Essentially, I was served the notice because of my statements against Jamaat," he said.
An advocate from the platform said Sakib regularly speaks against Jamaat and Shibir on television talk shows. "Recently, he also referred to [Ducsu VP] Shadik Kayem as 'rude' in a public statement. These could be among the reasons for issuing the show-cause notice," the lawyer added.
However, another female advocate of the platform told The Business Standard that Sakib's behaviour has been "highly undisciplined."
She alleged that he routinely harassed female colleagues and showed little regard for organisational norms. "Several female lawyers have lodged complaints against him for misconduct. That could be why the notice was issued," she said.
Meanwhile, the NLA has announced the formation of an investigation subcommittee to resolve the disciplinary matter, appointing Advocate Mostafa Azgar Sharifi as its head.
Sharifi told The Business Standard that the show-cause notice was issued due to Sakib's overall conduct within the organisation. "We will not provide details at this stage. You will be informed once the matter is resolved," he said.
The NLA was launched on 9 November last year with a 75-member committee. Supreme Court lawyer SM Azmal Hossain Bacchu serves as convener, with Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan as senior joint convener, six others as joint conveners, and Ershadul Bari Khondaker Mamun as member secretary.
