KCC polls: 3 mayoral aspirants' nomination cancelled on appeal

One mayoral aspirant got his candidacy back on appeal while nominations of three others remained cancelled in the Khulna City Corporation polls, voting to be held on 12 June.

"Of them, Zaker Party's candidate SM Sabbir Hossain, who allegedly did not submit his income tax return certificate during nomination submission, got back his candidacy," said Khulna Divisional Commissioner Zillur Rahman Chowdhury on Tuesday.

The nomination papers of three independent mayoral candidates—Al Amin Md Abdullah Chowdhury, SM Mushfiqur Rahman, and Syed Kamrul Islam— remained cancelled for allegedly submitting forged documents of 300 voters' support.

Of them, SM Mushfiqur said he would go for an appeal to the High Court to get back his candidacy.

After hearing appeals of 15 aspirants in the last two days, a mayoral candidate and six councillors got back their candidacy.

With the aforementioned seven candidates, the nomination of four mayoral candidates, 39 reserved ward councillor candidates, and 141 general ward councillor candidates have been valid so far.

Khulna Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Shahidul Islam said, "People whose nomination papers were cancelled in the appeal can appeal to the High Court."

According to the election schedule, any candidate can withdraw their candidacy by 25 May. Poll symbols among candidates will be allotted on 26 May.
