Bangladesh to receive full ICC payments despite T20 World Cup absence
In its press release, the ICC said that meetings were held with the PCB and BCB in a cordial atmosphere. Discussions covered the ongoing T20 World Cup as well as the broader future vision of cricket in South Asia.
The ICC will not impose any form of punishment or fine on Bangladesh, even if the team does not take part in the T20 World Cup after standing firm on its demands. On the contrary, the global governing body of cricket has announced that Bangladesh will be awarded hosting rights for another global tournament before the 2031 ODI World Cup. This was confirmed in an ICC press release issued today.
After Pakistan announced its decision not to play against India in the T20 World Cup, a meeting was held yesterday between the ICC, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Later last night, BCB President Aminul Islam stated in a press briefing that he had urged Pakistan to play the match against India. Shortly afterwards, the ICC announced its decisions relating to Bangladesh. They will not face any punishment or financial loss. The ICC will pay Bangladesh its outstanding dues. It will also provide Bangladesh with its share of the World Cup profits.
In its press release, the ICC said that meetings were held with the PCB and BCB in a cordial atmosphere. Discussions covered the ongoing T20 World Cup as well as the broader future vision of cricket in South Asia.
The ICC described Bangladesh's absence from the T20 World Cup as an "unfortunate absence". Following the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, Bangladesh had requested that, due to security concerns, its matches be played in Sri Lanka instead of India. However, the ICC did not agree to this proposal, which ultimately led to Bangladesh not participating in the World Cup.
The ICC stated that Bangladesh has a proud cricketing heritage and plays an important role in the global development of the game. With more than 200 million supporters, Bangladesh represents one of the most vibrant cricket markets in the world, and the ICC will continue to support the development of cricket in the country. The ICC also assured that it would ensure Bangladesh's non-participation in the T20 World Cup does not have any long-term negative impact on the country's cricket.
No punishment
The BCB later highlighted two key points separately. In light of the current circumstances, no financial, sporting or administrative penalties or sanctions will be imposed on the BCB for not taking part in the World Cup. The BCB will also retain the right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) should it choose to do so. This right exists under current ICC regulations and will remain fully intact.
Additional global tournament hosting rights
In addition, as part of an understanding between the ICC, BCB and PCB, it has been decided that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the 2031 World Cup. This will be subject to the ICC's standard host selection process, scheduling and operational requirements. Bangladesh is already set to co-host the 2031 ODI World Cup jointly with India.
The ICC statement added:
"It is agreed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalty will be imposed on Bangladesh Cricket Board in relation to the current matter…
The ICC's approach is guided by its principles of neutrality and fairness and reflects the shared objective of facilitative support rather than punishment.
As part of this understanding, an agreement has been reached that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2031… This reflects confidence in Bangladesh's capability as a host and reinforces the ICC's commitment to providing meaningful hosting opportunities across its membership to develop cricket in the country.
The ICC, PCB and BCB, along with other Members, remain committed to continued dialogue, cooperation and constructive engagement in the best interests of the sport…."
