“She is now under 24-hour intensive observation. Urgent tests have been completed and she has been given antibiotics and emergency treatment,” he added
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is suffering from an infection in her heart and lungs and is under close monitoring at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, Professor FM Siddiqui, a member of her medical board, said today (24 November).
"She had been falling sick frequently for the past few months. Multiple complications appeared together yesterday, causing severe respiratory distress and leading to her urgent admission," he told journalists in the early hours of today.
Siddiqui explained that she already has existing heart problems, including a permanent pacemaker, a stent, and a condition called mitral stenosis.
The chest infection combined with her heart condition has made her situation critical, he added.
"She is now under 24-hour intensive observation. Urgent tests have been completed and she has been given antibiotics and emergency treatment," he added.
Siddiqui also said at the time that the next 12 hours are very important for her condition and that more test results are expected within 24 hours.
Khaleda Zia was admitted around 8pm and is currently under the supervision of Professor Shahabuddin Talukder.
Following her admission, a medical board meeting was held. It was attended by Professor FM Siddiqui, Dr Zafar Iqbal, Dr Ziaul Haque, Dr Mamun Ahmed and retired Brigadier General Saiful Islam. Dr Zubaida Rahman joined virtually from London, along with specialists from Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States.
