Jamaat will eradicate corruption from its roots: Shafiqur
Dr Shafiqur highlighted the increasing participation of women in Jamaat’s activities
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today (28 January) said his party would not only address surface-level corruption but would eradicate it by uprooting its very roots.
He made the remarks while speaking at an election rally at the Khanjahan Ali (R) Shrine grounds in Bagerhat on Tuesday evening. "Jamaat-e-Islami believes in justice and fairness and is committed to building a state based on these principles," he said.
Dr Shafiqur highlighted the increasing participation of women in Jamaat's activities, noting that many women are taking to the streets in support of the party as they trust it to protect their dignity and property.
Referring to past repression, the Jamaat chief claimed that the party had lost 11 top leaders who were "killed in cold blood," while more than a thousand activists were killed and over 250 others were detained, disappeared, or held in secret detention facilities. He further alleged that the homes of Jamaat leaders and activists were demolished and that the party was banned through the cancellation of its registration and election symbol.
Describing Jamaat-e-Islami as an oppressed organisation, Dr Shafiqur urged voters to support the party's election symbol, the "Scales," to strengthen it.
Jamaat Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar, Islami Chhatra Shibir Central President Md Nurul Islam Saddam, and Jagannath University Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) Vice President Md Riazul Islam also spoke at the rally, which was chaired by Bagerhat District Jamaat Ameer Maulana Rezaul Karim.
Candidates Maulana Mashiur Rahman Khan (Bagerhat-1), Sheikh Mananjurul Haque Rahad (Bagerhat-2), Maulana Abdul Wadud (Bagerhat-3), and Principal Abdul Alim (Bagerhat-4), along with other party leaders, also addressed the gathering.
A large number of people attended the rally, filling the shrine grounds and surrounding areas, including the Khulna–Bagerhat highway, Sundarghona East Police Lines, and Ranbijoypur Road. Participants chanted slogans expressing hopes for a new Bangladesh and called for the implementation of the July Charter and a referendum to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.
