Jamaat wants proportional representation both for upper house and women's seats: Taher

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a proportional representation (PR) system for both the proposed upper house of parliament and the reserved women's seats, the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said today (14 July).
"Two-thirds of political parties participating in the consensus dialogue have expressed support for introducing proportional representation in the proposed upper house. We are hopeful it will be implemented," he told reporters following the 13th day of National Consensus Commission's second-phase dialogue held today at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
"If 31 out of 32 participating parties agree on something, can't we say consensus has been reached?" he said.
The Jamaat leader also said direct election for women in one-third of the total seats would be difficult.
Rejecting a proposal to form the upper house with representatives from 64 districts and 12 city corporations, Taher said, "That idea is not even worth discussing."
