Jamaat leaders expressed hope for the UN’s continued engagement in promoting human rights, women’s empowerment, and skill development initiatives in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has sought the United Nations' cooperation and technical assistance to ensure a free, fair, and credible national election, terming the upcoming polls "crucial for the country's future".
The call came during a courtesy meeting between Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Gwyn Lewis at the party chief's office in Bashundhara today (7 October), according to a press release.
Discussions covered a wide range of issues including Bangladesh's current political and human rights situation, the Rohingya crisis, and preparations for the upcoming national elections.
During the meeting, Jamaat leaders expressed hope for the UN's continued engagement in promoting human rights, women's empowerment, and skill development initiatives in Bangladesh.
They also emphasised the importance of UN support in strengthening democratic processes and fostering inclusive national development.
UN Human Rights Adviser Huma Khan accompanied Lewis at the meeting, which took place over breakfast in what was described as a "cordial and constructive atmosphere."
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar and Supreme Court lawyer Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem (Arman) were also present at the meeting.
