Jamaat to contest upcoming presidential election
Eleven-party alliance to finalise opposition nominee on Sunday
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to contest the upcoming presidential election.
The party disclosed the information in a press release today (8 August) following a meeting of its Central Executive Council at the central office in Moghbazar, this evening.
The meeting began at 7pm and was chaired by Opposition Leader and Jamaat Ameer Shafiquur Rahman. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and other executive council members attended the meeting.

In the notification, the party said the Central Executive Council held detailed discussions on the upcoming presidential election and unanimously decided to participate in it.
To this end, a meeting of the 11-party alliance has been called for Sunday. The alliance will finalise the opposition candidate at the meeting, according to the press release.
The executive council also discussed the country's overall political situation, constitutional reforms and various issues related to the political programmes announced by the 11-party alliance, the statement said.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on 24 July.
Under the constitution, the Election Commission must arrange a new presidential election within 90 days of the president's resignation.
The Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule last Thursday. According to the schedule, voting will take place on 20 August.
