Hill students’ org declares NCP ‘unwanted’ in Bandarban over Sarjis’ remark
They have demanded an immediate withdrawal of the remark and a formal apology from Sarjis Alam
Student leaders in Bandarban today (20 July) declared all activities of the National Citizen Party (NCP) "unwanted" in the district, in protest against a remark made by NCP leader Sarjis Alam, which they described as "inappropriate" and "humiliating" to the region.
The announcement came from members of the Parbatya Chattogram Chhatra Parishad's Bandarban unit during a press conference held this afternoon at the Bandarban Press Club, under the banner of the local student community.
During his speech Asif Iqbal, president of the student body's Bandarban unit said, "On 3 July during the 'July March' in Panchagarh, NCP leader Sarjis Alam made a comment calling Bandarban a place where corrupt and extortionist officials are sent as punishment."
"This remark is not only disappointing but also disgraceful, humiliating, and completely unwanted," he added.
"Such a derogatory comment from a national leader undermines the dignity of an entire district and exposes blatant state discrimination against the hill region. Referring to Bandarban as a place for punishing criminals insults the entire population of the Chittagong Hill Tracts," he said.
The students demanded an immediate withdrawal of the remark and a formal apology from Sarjis Alam.
Mahir Imtessar, vice president of the Parbatya Chattogram Chhatra Parishad (Hill Tracts Student Council), General Secretary Habib Al Mahmud and student leaders Khalid Bin Nazrul and Aminul Islam were also present at the event.
Parbatya Chattogram Chhatra Parishad is an organisation that works to uphold the rights of Bengalis living in the three hill districts.
