Government to back salt farmers in getting fair price: Nurul Majid

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that it is the moral obligation of the government to keep the root level salt farmers going.

"We will subsidise salt farming if required. Not only the salt trades but also the small and medium salt farmers need to get priority," said the minster to a salt farmers' rally in Cox's Bazar on Friday.

"To ensure a fair price, the government would make a list of actual salt farmers. Salt will be collected from them through the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation.

"I am a salt farmer, and I know what it takes to produce salt.

"Declaring salt farming as an industry is a promise that was made long ago. We will set up a salt board in Cox's Bazar in line with that. As a farmer, I express solidarity with you."

Sirajul Mostafa, Cox's Bazar district Awami League president, presided over the rally. Local political leader MA Manjur, Mujib Rahman, and Rezaul Karim; lawmakers Saimum Sarwar Kamal, Ashek Ullah Rafiq, and Kaniz Fatema Mostak also spoke among others.
