Father vs son contest takes shape in Noakhali-6 as NCP's Hannan declares 20 times more cash
Masud declared cash holdings of more than Tk35 lakh, while his father, Amirul Islam Md Abdul Malek, reported Tk1.70 lakh in cash.
An unusual electoral battle is emerging in the Noakhali-6 (Hatiya) constituency, where a father and son are contesting the same seat with sharply contrasting financial profiles, according to affidavits submitted to the Election Commission.
National Citizens Party (NCP) Senior Joint Chief Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud, 26, has filed his nomination papers to contest the upcoming national election from the constituency, marking his first foray into electoral politics.
The details were disclosed in affidavits published on the Election Commission's website.
Hannan is contesting the Noakhali-6 seat, while his father, Amirul Islam Md Abdul Malek, has also submitted nomination papers from the same constituency as a candidate of the Bangladesh Supreme Party (BSP).
Notably, Masud's nomination papers were submitted by his father.
According to Masud's affidavit, signed on 28 December 2025, he has declared cash holdings more than 20 times higher than those of his father, drawing attention to the sharp financial contrast between the two candidates.
Born on 1 January 2000, Masud is the son of Amirul Islam Md Abdul Malek and Ayesha Khatun Bilkis. He listed both his permanent and present address as Sagariya in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district. He has completed Alim, equivalent to the Higher Secondary Certificate.
In his profession, Masud identified himself as the proprietor of Digilanty Global, a digital business based in Dhaka's Paribagh. His spouse is a student, according to the affidavit. He reported an annual income of Tk6.70 lakh from business and other sources.
In terms of assets, Masud declared more than Tk35 lakh in cash and bank deposits amounting to Tk2,055.
He also reported Tk1 lakh invested in savings certificates or similar instruments. His movable assets include gold valued at Tk8 lakh, electronic equipment worth Tk1 lakh and furniture valued at Tk1 lakh, bringing his total movable assets to Tk46 lakh.
For the 2025–26 assessment year, Masud reported a net asset value of Tk98,39,656. His annual income for the year stood at Tk6 lakh, against which he paid Tk20,000 in income tax. He also stated that he has no criminal cases pending against him and no outstanding loans or liabilities.
His father, Amirul Islam Md Abdul Malek, a former educator, reported significantly lower assets. According to his affidavit, Malek declared cash holdings of Tk1.70 lakh and movable assets worth approximately Tk4 lakh.
With both nominations filed and campaigning expected to intensify, the Noakhali-6 race is attracting attention not only for its political implications but also for the rare father-versus-son contest and the stark generational and financial contrasts revealed in their affidavits.
