The Election Commission (EC) has reinstated the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with its electoral symbol of the 'scales' (Daripalla).

To this end, the commission today (3 July) issued a gazette notification, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.

The gazette stated "Whereas, under the Representation of the People Order, 1972, for registration as a political party, pursuant to the conditions of Article 90E of the said Order, the political party named Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was granted registration based on its application, through the Election Commission Secretariat's gazette notification dated 5 November 2008.

It added, "Whereas, pursuant to the judgment delivered in Writ Petition No. 630 of 2009 filed in the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was cancelled by the Election Commission Secretariat through gazette notification No. 17.00.0000.025.50.058.08-689 dated 28 October 2018."

"Whereas, in Civil Appeal No. 139 of 2013 with Civil Petition for Leave to Appeal No. 3112 of 2013, the Appellate Division has set aside the judgment delivered in Writ Petition No. 630 of 2009 filed in the High Court Division and ordered the restoration of the party's registration;" the gazette continued.

It further said, "Therefore, in view of the judgment delivered by the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court in Civil Appeal No. 139 of 2013 with Civil Petition for Leave to Appeal No. 3112 of 2013, the gazette notification issued by the Election Commission on 28 October 2018 bearing No. 17.00.0000.025.50.058.08-689 regarding the cancellation of the registration of the political party named Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is hereby repealed, and the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with its party symbol is hereby restored."
