BNP's Fazlur says he will 'drink poison' if Jamaat wins Kishoreganj-4 seat
"Their existence is due to the mercy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, and Khaleda Zia," he says
BNP Chairperson's Adviser and party candidate Fazlur Rahman has said he would "drink poison" if the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate wins the Kishoreganj-4 (Itna, Mithamain, and Austagram) constituency.
He made the remark during an election campaign last night (21 November) in Ward-2 of Itna Sadar Union.
Addressing party workers, Fazlur, also a freedom fighter, drew a comparison between supporters of the Liberation War and those aligned with anti-liberation forces.
"Those who stand for the spirit of the Liberation War, raise your hands," he said.
Nearly everyone present responded by raising their hands.
He then asked, "Raise your hands if you support the Razakars." No hands were raised.
Reacting to this, Fazlur said, "Not a single hand has gone up for the Razakars. And yet they [Jamaat] want to contest elections and form a government!
"If Jamaat wins in Itna, Mithamain and Austagram, I will drink poison."
Fazlur further claimed that Jamaat's political survival in Bangladesh is based on "mercy."
"Their existence is due to the mercy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ziaur Rahman, and Khaleda Zia," he said, adding that Khaleda Zia granted Jamaat leaders' appeal for protection in 2001.
"Now they call the BNP sycophants, fraudsters, and thieves. No one else uses such words except Jamaat," he said. "They are hypocrites, dishonest, and ungrateful. They attack whoever shelters them."
