No visible anti-fascist resistance from Jamaat in 10 years: Fakhrul
He alleged that partisan recruitment has weakened state institutions, including the Islamic Foundation.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said he has not seen any "visible political resistance" from Jamaat-e-Islami against fascism in the past decade, claiming instead that the group even had people "inside Chhatra League."
He made the statement while speaking of the Islamic Foundation's mosque-based education program in Dhaka today (22 November).
He said BNP fought directly and made major sacrifices, from 60 lakh leaders and activists facing false cases to nearly two lakh killings and around 1,700 enforced disappearances.
Fakhrul said that Ziaur Rahman once created a political space for the Jamaat, and the BNP had worked with them. He criticised the current Tk8,000 salary for imams and muezzins, often unpaid, calling it "inhumane".
He alleged that partisan recruitment has weakened state institutions, including the Islamic Foundation.
On political reforms, he said the chief adviser has announced February elections, but the reform commission's final proposal.
Fakhrul questioned Jamaat's recent claim linking its nomination to 'a ticket to heaven,' calling it baseless in Islam and an example of using religion for political gain.
He added that those who earlier opposed elections without PR are now most eager to participate, which he termed "double standards."
