Jamaat's MP candidate leads 5,000-motorcycle showdown in Cumilla-6
Supporters from different organisational levels marched with placards displaying the party’s scales electoral symbol, while many shouted slogans
A large motorcycle procession moved through parts of the Cumilla-6 constituency yesterday as Kazi Din Mohammad, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate for the upcoming national elections, campaigned across the area seeking support for his party.
The procession began from the Cumilla Central Eidgah premises on Friday morning and travelled along several key routes in the city. Party activists claimed that around 5,000 motorcycles joined the rally.
Supporters from different organisational levels marched with placards displaying the party's scales electoral symbol, while many shouted slogans.
Din Mohammad stood though the sunroof of a car, waving to residents gathered on both sides of the route. The Cumilla-6 seat covers Sadar, Sadar South, the City Corporation and the Cantonment areas.
Speaking at the end of the procession, he told party activists that the country needed to be freed from corruption, injustice and tyranny.
He said Jamaat sought to build a society guided by the Quran and Sunnah, and added that the party's politics aimed to serve people and fulfil religious obligations.
He urged supporters to work together to ensure victory for the scales symbol, and said the Islamic movement should advance through unity and peaceful mobilisation.
He pledged to help eliminate terrorism, extortion and violence, and said Jamaat wanted to contribute to building a just and fair society.
He also outlined a series of development promises for the constituency.
He said he would build and renovate roads, bridges and culverts in Cumilla, and promote local economic growth and industrialisation.
He added that employment creation, healthcare improvements and stronger educational facilities would remain core priorities.
Kazi Din Mohammad said he planned to modernise hospitals, increase the number of community clinics and develop local schools and colleges. He also promised to support efforts to maintain law and order and strengthen action against drugs and terrorism.
