Talks with UN delegation: BNP stresses fair February polls as key to restoring democracy
The meeting also covered the urgent humanitarian situation of the Rohingya refugees, says Khasru
In a high-level meeting with UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasised that restoring democratic order in Bangladesh hinges on holding credible and inclusive national election in February.
"There was an extensive discussion on the current political situation in Bangladesh, the upcoming elections, and our collective democratic future," Khasru said after the meeting at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan.
"To restore democracy, we must do it through elections. And to ensure that, we need to work together now," said the BNP leader.

He stated that the meeting also covered the urgent humanitarian situation of the Rohingya refugees.
Khasru noted that the issue of repatriation and continued foreign assistance was thoroughly discussed, with the United Nations reaffirming its commitment to support the displaced population until their safe return.
He expressed appreciation for Gwen Lewis's continued engagement, particularly her role in supporting democracy and human rights in Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Lewis described the Rohingya situation as "very deplorable" and stressed the need for sustained international cooperation to support Bangladesh in addressing the crisis.
BNP Standing Committee member and Chairperson's Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Foreign Affairs Adviser to BNP acting chairman Humayun Kabir, and the party's Organising Secretary Shama Obaid were also present at the meeting.
