BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council member Zainul Abedin Farroque today (12 April) urged Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to move forward with the national election plan without any delay by implementing minimum reforms and ensuring the trial of offenders affiliated with the Awami League.

"A conspiracy is underway to delay the elections. So, we call upon the chief adviser to proceed towards the election swiftly by carrying out the necessary reforms and bringing Awami League criminals to justice," he told a rally.

The Senbagh Jatiyatabadi Forum organised a rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding proper trial of former Awami League MP Morshed Alam for his alleged misdeeds.

Farroque said those who killed people and plundered the country's assets are yet to be brought to justice.

He alleged that former MP Morshed Alam was involved in widespread corruption and looting during the AL's tenure.

Farroque expressed concern that although Morshed Alam had been arrested, law enforcers did not seek to place him on remand for interrogation. "A person (Morshed) accused of massive corruption is being taken to court in an air-conditioned microbus. The authorities owe the people an explanation for this."

He demanded that the government place Morshed Alam on remand and thoroughly interrogate him regarding the accumulation of his vast wealth.

On Tuesday night, former Member of Parliament from Noakhali-2 (Senbagh-Sonaimuri) and Chairman of Bengal Group, Morshed Alam, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Police from the capital's Gulshan area.

Farroque, a former opposition chief whip in Parliament, alleged that proper legal action was not being taken against Awami League leaders involved in misdeeds and looting.

"Even when Awami League leaders are arrested, they enjoy privileges and are kept away from proper trial. Those who killed people with laughter and looted the country's wealth must face justice," he said.

The BNP leader said the cohorts of AL remained active within the administration, working to destabilise the country.

In such a situation, he urged the Chief Adviser to arrange a credible election as early as possible — one in which individuals like Morshed Alam cannot be elected.

"We don't want a government like Hasina's. We don't want leaders like the former Awami League law minister or education minister in the future government. Give us an election that brings honest individuals to power," the BNP leader said.
