BNP happy with ban on AL activities despite delay: Fakhrul
BNP had consistently maintained that banning the Awami League through legal means was both possible and necessary, he says

The BNP is happy with the government's decision to suspend the organisational activities of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies, party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (11 May).
In a statement, Fakhrul said, "We are pleased that the interim government finally decided last night (Saturday) to ban activities of the fascist Awami League and its affiliates. This step, although delayed, is in the interest of expediting the trials of those connected to the fascist regime for crimes against humanity and ensuring fair judicial processes."
The BNP leader noted that their party had consistently maintained that banning the Awami League through legal means was both possible and necessary.
"We have reiterated this demand in numerous meetings, rallies, and discussions," he added.
He also referenced BNP's long-standing opposition to the use of administrative orders to ban political parties, pointing out that the party had previously protested a similar move against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami before the fall of the Awami League government.
Fakhrul once again called for early elections, emphasising the public's ongoing struggle against authoritarianism.
"For the past 16 years, people have endured disappearances, killings, arrests, and oppression in their fight to restore democracy and voting rights. That goal has yet to be realised," he said.
He further urged the interim government to take note of growing public frustration over the absence of a clear roadmap for the upcoming elections.
